Bruce County Might Buy Brant School

Bruce County council is considering purchasing the Brant Township Central School property in Walkerton.

Council voted to notify the Bluewater District School Board of its interest in the property, which was put up for sale following the closure of the school in 2012.

Warden John Close says the interest in the property is strategic, pointing out the school property is located next to both the county administration building and Brucelea Haven long-term care home.

Close stresses the county has not made any commitments to purchase the Brant Central property, but this gives them time to see if there’s any potential uses for the property.

Kincardine Mayor Larry Kraemer was the lone vote in opposition, and he says he has no interest in purchasing more county property, adding it would be another ongoing expense for taxpayers.

A staff report is expected to come before council, outlining potential options for the property.
