Cancer Coverage Extended For Firefighters

Huron County’s fire coordinator says it’s great news that the province is adding six new types of cancer to the list of cancers presumed to be linked to a career in firefighting.

Marty Bedard explains studies show that firefighters face a significantly increased risk of cancer because of exposure related to their job. He says some firefighters are also forced to retire early as a result of that exposure.

The province’s announcement, which was made yesterday, ┬ástates the changes will remove the burden of proof from claimants for coverage under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.

Bedard says that’s something they’ve been fighting for since 1960, and the announcement states the addition of the six new cancers will be retroactive to that time.
