No Cancer Cluster in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh

The cancer rates in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh and the rest of Huron County are not any higher than the rest of the province.

That’s the conclusion of a preliminary investigation by the Huron County Health Unit into a possible cancer cluster in ACW.

The investigation started in January. Current and former residents of ACW were asked to contact the health unit if they, or someone they knew, had cancer.

The health unit plotted all the reported cancer cases on a map to see if people with a specific type of cancer were clustered in any part of ACW. The top three cancer types reported by ACW residents were breast, colon, and prostate cancer. But there was no evidence that any one type of cancer was clustered in a small part of ACW.

Public Health Epidemiologist Doctor Erica Clark concluded that residents of ACW and Huron County have a similar cancer risk as the rest of Ontario.
