Sifto Siren Testing Begins Soon

The Sifto Salt Mine in Goderich is about to begin testing emergency sirens. Those sirens were part of the remcommendations from the inquiry into the death of Norman Leberge in the tornado that hit Goderich in August of 2011.

Mayor Deb Shewfelt says no one is sure how well the sound would travel through the town, but suggests they might be able to incorporate one siren into the clock in the downtown Courthouse.

Shewfelt adds there would have to be some education involved, so that residents could tell the difference between an emergency siren and the normal fire siren.

He also wants clear criteria for when it would be used, because if it was sounded for every weather alert, the siren would become meaningless in time.
