Alice Munro Day Proposed At North Huron Council

A group is asking North Huron Council to declare July 10th, 2015 Alice Munro Day.

The Friends of Alice Munro say they would like the municipality to hold a world wide celebration on this day, which would include unveiling a statue of Alice Munro.   They are hoping to have Munro in attendance, along with the Governor General of Canada for the unveiling.

John Cull says he’s spoken to well known Canadian sculptor Ruth Abernethy and she said she’d be honored to sculpt Munro. Cull adds depending on the size and detailing, it’ll cost between 70 and 125-thousand dollars.

The group will be launching a community fundraising campaign for the statue.

Meanwhile, North Huron Council has passed a motion to install two signs at the north and south end of Wingham, recognizing Wingham being the birth place of Alice Munro.

CAO Gary Long says they would like to install the signs as soon as possible.
