South Huron Gets Help To Buy Former Centralia College

Huron County council has approved a combination of grant and loan that will allow South Huron to purchase the former Centralia College property from the province.

Council made a few minor adjustments to the original motion before approving a grant to a maximum of $500,000 to cover the cost of the purchase as well as legal fees.

The loan would be for $1-million, with that money used to demolish the remaining buildings on the property.

Warden Joe Steffler pointed out the loan would be repaid in payments of at $100,000 a year, starting next year.

Steffler added Huron County has to “get into the game” if it hopes to get back some of the industry it’s lost over the past few years and this is a way of creating shovel-ready land for anyone who wants to move into the county. Steffler also points out this is an economic development project that will benefit all of Huron County.
