Ironmen Win Quarter-Final Series

After a strong third period, the Wingham Ironmen have won the Schmalz Cup Quarter-Final series, defeating the Penetang Kings 4-2.

On Sunday afternoon, the Ironmen were evenly matched in the first period, which ended 1-1. The Kings were ahead 2-1 at the end of the second.

In the third period, the Ironmen picked up steam scoring twice in a four minute span.  The first was on the powerplay when Aaron Armstrong carried the puck behind the Penetang net.  He snapped a pass out in front where the puck hit the skate of a Kings’ defenceman and went into the net.  Four minutes later, a turn over at the Wingham blueline sprung Armstrong and Alex Kuntz on a 2-on-1.  Armstrong held onto the puck and snapped it high glove side to make it 3-2 Wingham.

Then a bizarre moment.  Penetang defenceman Austin Fishcer went after Armstrong, tearing off the Wingham captain’s helmet and proceeded to try to goad him into a fight.  Even after the linesman stepped in, the Penetang player kept skating after Armstrong.  When the officials settled everything down Wingham was on the powerplay but Penetang had all of the push.

The Kings spent the entire two minutes in Wingham territory and had several chances to score.  After the penalty expired, Penetang pulled its goaltender for the extra attacker and continued to create opportunities.

Then with :32 seconds left, the puck split the Penetang defence and Alex Kuntz jumped on the opportunity, catching up with the puck and slapping it into the empty net to make it 4-2.

That sealed the win, giving Wingham the series win 4-2.

The Ironmen are into the semi-finals along with Essex, Lakefield and Grimsby.  The pairings for the next round are shaping up to be Wingham – Essex and Grimsby – Lakefield but that has yet to be confirmed.
