The Port Elgin Business Improvement Area is proposing to take control of one of the main public areas in the downtown core.

The BIA is looking to lease the Coulter Parkette from Saugeen Shores council for the purpose of carrying out a $100,000 renovation of the parkette at the corner of Goderich  St. and Green St.

Mayor Mike Smith says the project has the potential to be a productive partnership for council, pointing out the parkette is underused in its current state.

The BIA plan proposes to resurface the parkette, as well as add new street furniture and gardens and potentially a small staging area for events.

Saugeen Shores council has asked staff to hold more discussions with the Port Elgin BIA with the hopes of reaching a formal agreement on a lease and funding structure.
