ACW Man Latest ‘Grandparent’ Scam Victim

Another Huron County senior has fallen victim to the “Grandparent or Emergency” phone scam.

Huron County OPP say an 80-year-old man from Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh answered a phone call earlier this month from a scammer claiming to be his grandson.

The scammer convinced the victim his grandson had been involved in a car accident in the Dominican Republic and needed $4,500 wired to him in two installments.

The victim completed the first transaction, sending the scammer nearly $2,000.

He was attempting to make the second transaction when a Canada Post employee alerted him to the possibility it was scam.

The victim was able to contact family members that verified his grandson hadn’t travelled to the Dominican Republic and was not involved in a motor vehicle collision.
