ACW Council Caps Open Forum
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh council has made a slight revision to its procedural bylaw.
Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek explains they have always allowed an open forum after each council meeting to give people in the gallery an opportunity to ask questions.
Van Diepenbeek stresses council believes this is a valuable way for residents to communicate with councillors and councillors to be aware of the concerns of residents.
But Ven Deipenbeek adds the procedural bylaw only states that there be an open forum at the end of the meeting, but with no guidelines or restrictions. Council decided to add a cap of ten minutes for each person on discussion of a particular issue.
Van Diepenbeek points out he’s never seen discussion cut off and the chair has the option of allowing it to continue beyond the ten minutes if there are still valid questions being asked.
