Musical celebrating Carole King to open soon

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical opens at the Huron Country Playhouse Main Stage on June 15.

Emily Lukasic plays the role of Carole King and she describes it as more of the story of Carole King rather than a tribute to her music. She says it starts off with King at Carnegie Hall receiving several awards for her Tapestry album and then jumps back to King at sixteen, just wanting to be a song writer and tell stories through her songs. Then it moves ahead to her meeting Gerry Goffin and they get married and start producing music.

“When I first saw the show I didn't realize that they were responsible for so many of the big hits that I just kind of knew of that era. It's a story about the marriage between she and Gerry and how things don't work out but sometimes the beautiful things that come from that when it does work out," Lukasic enthused.

So, Lukasic says the play depicts King pitching the songs in the studio and then a group like the Shirelles or the Drifters singing the song.

Lukasic says what's beautiful about the music that King and Goffin produced is that it is about the lyrics.

“Even in the show the character says songs by Gershwin are like little plays, so how can you fit so much meaning into just three minutes of song and poetry. But I think that's what they're famous for doing, the two of them and what Carole credits Gerry with doing is being able to say so much in so little," added Lukasic.
