Town offers free shower program at local rec centre

The Town of St. Marys is now offering free showers at the Pyramid Recreation Centre.

A release from the town shares that members of the public can visit the rec centre on Tuesdays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to access the free shower program. The goal is to offer a safe, private and secure space for people of all abilities to have a shower, and toiletry supplies, like shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, will be provided at no charge.

St. Marys' Community Services Department came up with the idea for the program, along with Brittany Petrie, St. Marys’ Community Outreach Worker. Part of Petrie’s role is to support residents experiencing homelessness, some of whom may not have regular access to a shower.

Anyone wanting to access the shower program can visit the Guest Services desk at the Pyramid Recreation Centre during program hours. Towels are not provided and patrons are asked to keep their showers to a max of 30 minutes.

“Most people take having a hot shower for granted,” said Petrie. “But there are individuals in our community who simply don’t have access to shower facilities. This program is designed to fill that gap for anyone who needs it, for any reason.”
