County councillors pleased with redevelopment plans for Rockwood Terrace

Grey County council got a look at plans from consultants that are designing the new Rockwood Terrace long-term care and assisted living home in West Grey during a virtual meeting on February 2.

Representatives from Colliers International made the presentation, with project leader Andrew Rodrigues telling county council that there will be walls separating all living areas, and only bathrooms with adjoining doors will be shared, an improvement on the typical setup that has two beds in the same room separated by a curtain, as well as shared windows and bathrooms.

"It was a point in time where some of the new councilors, it was their first introduction to what is happening with this re-development, including the size and scope, and how in-depth the planning is for this project" said West Grey Kevin Eccles, who noted that the project is close to the top of the priority list for West Grey council as it moves into 2023 and beyond.

The new facility will have 128 long-term care beds across 104 rooms, as well as 76 private rooms and 24 basic rooms. Four specialized rooms are also being added for "heavy patients."

Other details discussed include the project being built to net-zero standards, a rooftop garden for residents that includes a plot to grow herbs and other plants, a café inside the Village Square area and an accessible walking trail.

Construction is getting underway later this year, and is scheduled to be completed by June of 2026.
