HSAT charging more for long-distance trips

Huron Shores Area Transit (HSAT) is adjusting its ticket prices.

Transit Coordinator Susan Mills says a consultant suggested prices of $5 for local trips and $10 for longer trips, but in an attempt to encourage ridership during the pandemic, the two-fee structure was reduced to a flat fee of $5, regardless of destination.

“Rural transit systems, we travel a lot longer distances than you would in an urban environment and we really need to distinguish between the local and the long distance fares so that ultimately we are a sustainable system.” Mills said, pointing out that that the rate change will come into affect on April 1.

“The local trips will still be $5. So if you're going from Exeter, Grand Bend, or Bayfield, those trips all still $5. But the $10 is for the long-distance trips such as Exeter to London, or Grand Bend to Sarnia.”

Mills adds they're also increasing the price for their Smart Card Monthly Pass from $50 to $60 for unlimited rides in a 31-day period. Children 12-and-under will continue to ride for free when accompanied by an adult.

More information about their fee schedule and routes can be found on the Huron Shores Area Transit web site.
