Local group attempting to save Howson Dam

A group of Wingham residents is attempting to save the Howson Dam at the north end of town.

Rennie Alexander says they maintain the dam is still a great place for people in Wingham and the surrounding area to come and enjoy fishing, swimming, kayaking and having a great time and it's one of the few facilities in Wingham that isn't costing the town anything.

Alexander says it does need to be repaired.

“It needs to be repaired and there have been several engineering reports that said it could be repaired and we have gone to council and said we will fund raise for the repair of that dam and they've turned us down flatly," Alexander stated.

In his and the group's opinion, Alexander says the dam and that area could still be used during the summer if they put in a few stop logs, but the water wouldn't be nearly as high as it was twenty years ago.

Alexander also says the councillors have been saying for years they don't want to put any taxpayers money towards repairing the dam.

“The councillors have been saying for years they don't want to put any taxpayers money towards repairing the dam. Just this week Ben Lobb's office published a new grant for $489 million, called a Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund that could be used to repair the dam," added Alexander

Alexander says more information about their efforts to save the dam can be found on the http://www.howsondam.weebly.com web site.
