Fraud victim loses $5,000

A recent victim of fraud in North Perth lost $5,000 to scammers.

Perth County OPP say they were called to a residence in North Perth around 1 p.m. on January 10 after the victim reported a potential fraud. The victim claims they received a message on their phone about suspicious activity on their credit card. Subsequently the victim received a phone call from a female who identified herself as an employee of a bank. The suspect advised the victim to attend different stores to purchase gift cards and their bank to withdraw cash. The victim was told the money for the purchases would be transferred into their account.

The investigation is ongoing. Fraud has become a multi-billion dollar business, and police are reminding everyone to never give out financial information to unknown people on the phone or via text or email. If you need to verify something with your accounts, call your bank branch.

If you have been a victim of fraud, the OPP can be reached anything, anywhere in the Province of Ontario at 1-888-310-1122.
