Huron Council concerned by proposed election boundary changes

Some boundary adjustments proposed for Huron County municipalities by the Federal government didn't get much support from Huron County council when they were introduced a this week's council meeting.

Huron County Warden, Glen McNeil says “We have a concern in the north with Howick and also in the south. So Huron County council on Wednesday expressed a concern that will be forwarded to the Federal government in a situation where we have an opportunity to discuss the boundary changes.”

McNeil says the proposed change in the north would take Howick completely out of Huron County and move it to Perth or Wellington. He says “In the south, again, it is a matter of carving up some of the municipalities so that they would not be, in their entirety, within this riding and that is a concern to not only the municipality and also Huron County.”

McNeil explains the proposals the Federal government has outlined are “based on population density and they would like the populations to be very similar in each riding. However, there is also advantages to specific municipalities to remain in Huron County.”

McNeil says the feeling among county councillors is unanimous that Huron County has a system that is working very well and they would like that to be maintained and he says they will take that message to the Federal government.
