North Huron Reeve, Bernie Bailey, says they hope to start construction on new houses in Hutton Heights early next year.
Bailey says it's taken more than three years to get it done, but, with the support of council, the water pipes to Hutton Heights were approved and are being put underground this week.
“By running the water services from Wingham to East Wawanosh we will create a minimum of one hundred fully-serviced lots, instead of around twenty or twenty-five unserviced lots. This will give North Huron much needed housing in several housing categories.”
Bailey adds, providing a range of housing options is critical.
“Our sitting council would like to see a multitude of different types, just not one stereotype. We need housing for everybody from minimum wage right up to doctors and lawyers. We're starving for houses, so it not just going to be the million dollar mansions you see in some locations.”
Bailey also points out, the development had the unanimous support of council and everyone recognized the urgency to get new houses built.
“We pushed it right through, everybody understood the circumstances. This sitting council turned the pipes and we went to East Wawanosh, which is part of North Huron, therefore, every house that's built will help everyone else in the community with their tax problem.”
Bailey says the pipes are going into the ground now and water will be connected to the Hutton Heights line later this fall and he expects construction on new homes to begin by the middle of next year.
