South Bruce Peninsula agrees to short contract extension with Ontario Provincial Police

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula has voted to extend its current contract with the Ontario Provincial Police.

Council approved the recommendation at its meeting on Tuesday, opting to extend the existing deal for one year under the same terms and conditions, and not look into an agreement that carried a longer term.

Over the past several years, there has been discussion about South Bruce Peninsula, which includes the communities of Sauble Beach, Wiarton and Hepworth, exploring other possibilities for police coverage, however council has opted to keep the status quo, at least for the time being.

In 2020, a proposal for the nearby Saugeen Shores Police Service to take over police coverage of South Bruce Peninsula went nowhere. Saugeen Shores had made a 20-year contract offer for its municipal police force to take over coverage for South Bruce Peninsula in January, 2020.

South Bruce Peninsula currently spends over $2-million dollars annually on police coverage with the OPP.
