Huron County OPP have now released their Canada Road Safety Week numbers for the safety blitz that ran June 25th to July 3rd.
A release says that police were looking for the "Big 4" causal factors in serious collisions on OPP patrolled roadways, which are Impaired Driving, Distracted Driving, Aggressive Driving and Failing to Wear a Seatbelt. Huron County officers laid a total of 226 charges during the campaign, including 164 for speeding, 7 for failing to wear a seatbelt and 1 for impaired driving. Police investigated a total of 34 crashes during the campaign. 12 of those crashes were with animals, eleven with deer and one with a coyote.
Some of the other noteworthy crashes included two fatal crashes. One involved a 17-year-old cyclist that was struck and killed on Crediton Road. The second fatal crash involved a vehicle that collided with a bridge abutment on Rodgerville Road. A 27-year-old driver died in the crash.
Additionally, a motorcyclist sustained life-threatening injuries after he collided with a deer, a 19-year-old was served with a 3-day driver's licence suspension after she drove into a ditch after drinking alcohol and there was also a collision involving a horse and buggy that was struck by a vehicle.
"Despite the high levels of visibility and enforcement we still experienced some very serious crashes during the campaign, two of which were fatal. Our primary goals remain the same during our traffic safety campaigns - Provide a high level of awareness, visibility, and enforcement to reduce serious collisions on our roadways. And secondly, to target those drivers that put others at risk. Every single driver must do their part to help prevent these deadly crashes by driving in a safe and responsible manner," says Huron County OPP Staff Sergeant, Andrew MacIsaac.
