Council approves new addition at Cooper Field ball diamond

West Perth Council has approved a new addition to the Cooper Field baseball diamond in Mitchell.

At their meeting this week, council gave the go ahead to construct a new field at the site. Recreation, Facilities and Parks Manager, Darcey Cook, says for now, the new field being constructed won't be for game use yet.

"As of right now it'll just be a practice diamond. It won't be a full fledged diamond for a couple of years probably, but we're going to work at it as a practice diamond and hope to expand from there. Currently we are just starting to get the project rolling and I think you'll see a lot of progress over the next month or two. The Cooper Field Committee is really pushing it forward and they'll be doing the hard work on it, but I think it'll hopefully be ready to roll in late summer."

In terms of the cost, Cook notes that West Perth had already set aside up to $30,000 to build the new field out of parkland reserves.

"The Cooper Field Committee is also putting some costs in, especially the startup and the layout, as well as the volunteer hours that are saving some funds. But the $30,000 that the municipality has earmarked for it will definitely be enough to get the new field started."
