The Mayor of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh says council has deferred a decision on a request by some residents to deny a proposal to develop an aggregate mine on Little Lakes Road near Ball's Bridge.
Glen McNeil says Lobo Sand and Gravel is proposing to develop an aggregate mine on Little Lakes Road and some residents have expressed concerns about the impact that would have on what they consider to be a very environmentally significant and sensitive area. McNeil says they heard a presentation from some of the residents at this week's council meeting, which he described as compassionate and emotional and council voted to defer a decision on the request until June 21st.
McNeil says they made that decision for a number of reasons.
"One, to show our residents the respects that they deserve and to also exercise due diligence and it has provided us the opportunity to verify any comments that were made at the meeting by individuals."
McNeil adds, the current zoning for the property does permit the activity that is being proposed.
"What everyone has to understand is that municipal councils are bound by Provincial regulations and we take everything into consideration, both of the applicants and of the residents in this situation."
McNeil says he fully expects council will make a decision at the council meeting on June 21st.
