Hanover Mayor offers town's support following downtown fire

After a major fire at 315 10th Street destroyed a building in Hanover this morning, the mayor of the town is offering support.

Mayor Sue Patterson says the fire destroyed Fabulous Fashions and the former Forum Hotel Rooming House, and also affected other businesses in the downtown core. Total damages are not yet known. Patterson says police and fire crews believe everyone escaped the building and are accounted for.

"There are no reports of serious injuries. Our hearts go out to the individuals, the families and businesses affected by the fire. The impact will be especially hard following 2 years of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions. I do want to praise the efforts of our fire department and first responders and I am grateful to the 4 neighbouring fire departments for their assistance."

Two Hanover Police officers received treatment for smoke inhalation at the scene by Grey County Paramedics. 10th Street between 9th Avenue and 11th Avenue remains closed to pedestrians and vehicles to allow emergency crews to do their work. Patterson says that in a release from Grey County, measures are already being taken to help those affected.

"A number of individuals have been displaced and various support agencies are responding to provide assistance for primary needs. We are asking residents to conserve water and avoid the downtown core. It will take time to assess the damage, but I do want to emphasize that we and the community are here to support those affected in their recovery."

The release from Grey County states:

"A crisis response team with representatives from Grey County and community agencies is on the scene providing support to the victims. Displaced residents are asked to go to Grace United Church at 310 12th street in Hanover for assistance. The team is providing food, clothing and emotional and other supports. Nurse practitioners and community paramedics are also providing care to those in need. Grey County is working with YMCA Housing Services to assess needs."

Additionally, United Way Grey Bruce has set up a disaster relief fund, and donations can be made through http://www.donatetoday.ca by choosing the General Fund and leaving a note to indicate Hanover Fire.
