County council gets update on use of off-road vehicles

Huron County Engineer, Steve Lund, brought county councillors up to date on the use of off-road vehicles at their last meeting.

Lund explained, in 2021 the Province amended the regulations regarding the use of off-road vehicles to allow ORVs on public highways in all municipalities listed where speed limits of 80 kilometres an hour apply. Lund says Huron County is not listed in that regulation.

"Currently Huron County does prohibit ORVs unless we have made exceptions to our bylaw. There are a couple up in the north end of the county and also there are exemptions in terms of certain usage, such as farm use and for trappers under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act."

Lunds adds, there were some local municipalities within Huron County that were listed in regulation 803.

"There were some local municipalities within Huron County, that were listed in regulation 803 and essentially all of them are, with the exception of Bluewater, South Huron and Huron East. So A-C-W, Howick, Central Huron, North Huron and Morris-Turnberry they are allowed."
