County Warden hails local homeless emergency shelter set to reopen this month

Huron County is opening its Out of the Cold:Heart to Home emergency shelter later this month.

The shelter is located at the Lakeshore United Church in Goderich and provides shelter and meals for as many as fifteen individuals through the winter. Huron County Warden, Glen McNeil, points out, providing overnight shelter is an essential first step in addressing the homelessness issue.

"Since the Out of the Cold shelter opened in 2020, sixteen individuals have been successfully, permanently housed, with assistance from the Heart to Home Stability Team and the program associated with that."

McNeil adds, Out of the Cold works with a number of partners to deliver the total program they do and the partners include the County of Huron, Choices for Change and CMHA Thames Valley Addiction and Mental Health Services.

"We have staff that are specifically trained in trauma, in substance use and mental health services and we attempt, the best we can, to provide wrap-around services for those individuals who find themselves homeless."

The Out of the Cold:Heart to Home Shelter will open its doors on November 15th.
