Goderich Council hiring consultant to help with affordable housing strategy

Goderich Council is taking measures to try and address local housing needs.

The Mayor of Goderich says council has approved a motion to hire a consultant to come up with a plan, over the next couple of months, to create a Community Improvement Plan to address the need for affordable housing in Goderich.

"So they will help to bring forward, over the next couple of months, a plan to do a Community Improvement Plan to address the need of affordable housing and set out a guideline or suggestions on how to do it and the costs related to it," says Mayor John Grace.

Grace says councillors have said on several occasions that they need to take the lead on affordable housing.

"Council have said numerous times, we need to take the lead on affordable housing, nobody else is. We need to take the lead on affordable and attainable housing for the town of Goderich. We are in a crisis mode now."

Grace says the Community Improvement Plan is the first step in creating the mechanism that will encourage developers to build affordable housing.
