Goderich donates $15,000 toward Huron Hospice campaign

The Town of Goderich has donated money toward Huron Hospice's Moments Matter Even More campaign.

Goderich council voted to make a $15,000 donation toward the hospice's campaign, which is a capital fundraising campaign aimed at making numerous improvements to the hospice. The project will see the construction of four bedrooms, converting two bedrooms into a family space, accessible walking paths, a new covered entry and expanded driveway, renovation of utilities and the HVAC system and new nursing and communication spaces.

The Huron Hospice first opened in 2018 after the hospice purchased a home and began repurposing it for their needs, and they have since seen their nurses and volunteers provide end-of-life care to over 130 residents and their families at no cost.

Huron Hospice's Jay McFarlan, Chair of the Board, expressed thanks to Goderich Mayor John Grace and the entire Goderich Council in a release.

“Your gift helps secure an essential place for Huron Hospice, in Huron County health care. For over 28 years, Huron Hospice has been training volunteers that provide in-home compassionate care for people and their families who are on the end-of-life journey. Huron Hospice also facilitates cancer support groups, grief and bereavement programs for children, youth and adults.”

McFarlan says they always knew they would eventually need to expand their facility.

“At the time, we knew we would have to expand the Hospice and increase the number of beds. However, by April of 2019, the demand for residence services meant the Hospice was full much of the year and had a waiting list. We dusted off the early expansion plans to add additional bedrooms. When the project is complete, Huron Hospice will increase capacity at the residence from 60 to up to 100 families per year, to help meet the increasing need for our end-of-life care in Goderich and Huron County.”
