Police respond to fatal drowning at Port Elgin beach

The Saugeen Shores Police Service and South Bruce OPP have confirmed that a fatal drowning occurred recently at Port Elgin beach.

On July 12th at 11:49 a .m., officers responded alongside Saugeen Shores Fire Department and Bruce County Paramedic Services EMS to the Main Beach in Port Elgin for a possible drowning. Witnesses stated a paddle boarder had fallen off their board in deep water beyond the marked swimming area and appeared to be in distress. Witnesses heard calls for help and a number of civilians managed to pull the paddle boarder to shore and life saving CPR measures were performed. The victim, identified as a 38-year-old Burlington resident, was taken to local hospital where they were later pronounced deceased.

Police are reminding residents that Lifejackets/Personal Floatation Devices are required safety equipment for anyone using a paddle board, as they could potentially save your life.
