AMDSB to host virtual student mental health event

The Mental Health Team from Avon Maitland District School Board is hosting a student mental health virtual event this week.

On Tuesday, January 19th, the AMDSB Mental Health Team will partner with the Tanner Steffler Foundation and Rural Response for Healthy Children to host the You Matter 2 mental health event, a follow up to a similar one held recently for AMDSB students. Guest speaker Fahd Alhattab will return to talk with students virtually about building resiliency and how it relates to mental health. Mike Masse from Stratford will also speak on managing chaos in student life by learning to be more mindful of their surroundings.

The event, which is run by students for students, will run from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. for participating students. Production of the virtual event is being done by Faux Pop Media and care packages have been sent to participating students, which was funded through Rural Response’s Trillium grant in support of student and community mental health.

“Now, more than ever, youth mental health is a concern for our students, their families, and our staff. This past year, the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting school closures, have children experiencing a world that is challenging even for those of us with excellent coping skills and resiliency. This event will provide our school teams with a reminder of the community and school support available and allow students to collaborate with their peers to develop plans to implement in their schools.” says Jodie Baker, Superintendent of Education.
