Rally being held protesting conservation act changes in Blyth

A rally is being organized later this morning in front of Huron-Bruce M-P-P Lisa Thompson's office in Blyth.

Spokesperson, Doctor Jim Hollingworth, of Goderich, says they're protesting the passing of Budget Bill 229 that includes a section they say strips the rights of conservation authorities to help municipalities in developments and protects fragile land.

Hollingworth says the legislation, which has already had third reading, is a huge issue.

"It gives the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Forestry the power to give permission to develop whatever in very sensitive areas of our conservation authority's lands."

Hollingworth also maintains, once these sensitive areas are destroyed they can't be fixed.

"So once these sensitive areas are destroyed by urbanization or parking lots or transfer stations for big trucks, these areas will never be reclaimed. So it's not just something that is temporary and can be fixed later on."

The rally is scheduled for eleven o'clock this morning in front of M-P-P Lisa Thompson's office in Blyth and Hollingworth says they are asking anyone interested in joining them to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
