The Special Investigations Unit says there is no basis for charges against two OPP officers involved in a fatal shooting in Exeter.
On the evening of December 3rd, 2019, Huron County OPP officers responded to a residence in Exeter to assist firefighters who were trying to enter the home to extinguish a kitchen fire. A 44-year-old man who was alone in the house refused to allow fire crews to enter by blocking the doorway while wielding an axe. Officers forced the door open with a battering ram and the man approached them wielding the axe and the two officers fired their weapons at the man. The man later succumbed to his wounds at a local hospital.
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s death.
