Protect Our Waterways anti-DGR group angered after sign damage

The Protect Our Waterways-No Nuclear Waste group is angry over damage to signs placed on the lawns of group members.

In a release on October 30th, the group say they are upset over repeated damages caused to anti-DGR signs placed on the lawns of various group members, most recently caused by chainsaws. The group is calling on South Bruce Mayor Robert Buckle and council to condemn the acts of vandalism that the group claims has been occurring over a lengthy period including theft of the anti-DGR signs from ratepayer properties.

The group say they will continue to make their voices heard regarding the DGR project that they say is an untested and dangerous project that could jeopardize local waterways and land.

“This is a planned act of property destruction” said Ron Groen, a Protect our Waterways board member who inspected the damage. “This was not a spur of the moment thing."

“This is an emotional issue, but damaging the property of residents and landowners in close proximity to the optioned and purchased NWMO land would appear counter productive to winning the favour of those people who directly surround the proposed dump site” says Michelle Stein, President of Protect Our Waterways - No Nuclear Waste. Stein adds “this isn’t the best way to win people to your cause and these types of actions are exactly why Protect Our Waterways is needed in the community and signs can be replaced and we will continue to resist through peaceful, yet assertive dialogue."

“We will not relent and our organization will seek all available avenues to bring a democratic vote on this project to the people of South Bruce," says Bill Noll, Vice President of Protect Our Waterways - No Nuclear Waste.
