County approves climate change adaption plan

Huron County council has approved the Corporation's Climate Change Adaption Plan for the next five years.

The plan was presented at the last council meeting by the county's Climate Change and Energy Specialist, Lily Morrow. Morrow said the plan lays out adaptive action the county will take over the next five years to help improve the resiliency of services, operations and assets against the impact of climate change. Morrow says the goal is simple.

"So those actions will help to improve the resiliency of our services, our operations and our assets to the impact of climate change. So just make sure that with more extreme weather and some of those projected impacts, we'll be ready for the future and be able to continue operating."

Morrow also points out, while adaptation is part of the plan, there are some things they can do to mitigate the impact of climate change.

"One thing the county is looking at doing is development a high-performance building standard that would make any construction or retro-fits that we are doing on our facilities are built to be efficient and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also be resilient to extreme weather impact."

Morrow said what climate change is likely to bring in the next few years is higher temperatures, more heatwaves, more rain, stronger winds and generally more extreme weather.
