Local student wins trip to Panama for eco-sustainable school idea

A proposal for more eco-sustainable schools has earned a Grade 12 student from Central Huron Secondary School a trip to Panama next month.

Kaori Ono is one of 30 students from Canada to participate in an Education First Service Learning Tour.

Ono said she was shocked when her proposal was chosen.

“I proposed an idea for having more eco-sustainable schools and now I'm being sent to Panama to work with biologists and scientists and do things like mangrove re-forestation and then in Ottawa, a few months after, we're going to speak with MPs and senators to help propel my ideas forward,” said Ono.

She added there are several things all of us can do to create a more eco-sustainable community and much of it simply involves changing some old habits.

“I feel like the biggest part is incorporating more environmentally sustainable practice in our education because if we're teaching our students then we can change the future as they grow and they can take what they've learned for our school and then use that in their future lives,” added Ono.

She believes the most important part is incorporating more environmentally sustainable practices into our education system.
