West Perth settle on final budget numbers

West Perth Council has settled on some final numbers for the 2020 budget.

At the meeting on March 2, council agreed on a 5.4 per cent levy increase. However, CAO Jeff Brick said when the county and education taxes are factored in, the levy increase for residents will be lower than that.

"With the county and the taxation portions, we anticipate it will be in around the four to 4.5 per cent range."

That increase will mean roughly 20 dollars more for an average single-family household over last year and roughly $230 more per farm property. Among the many projects the municipality has this year include the new Mitchell Fire Hall, roads and bridge repairs and a staff salary restructuring.

Brick said they have a number of strategic investments they're working on this year, including adding a new staff member after holding off on that for a while and also some other internal budgeting.

"We are doing a little bit of work on our salaries, which is something we do every 4 years to keep ourselves competitive with the market, so those are a couple of investments along with the new staff member within the organization that we are making."

Council will have the final draft budget presented at the next meeting on Monday, March 9, and they will vote to officially adopt it.
