COSTCO membership card leads Stratford police to alleged impaired driver

The Stratford Police Service says they used a Costco card to track an alleged drunk driver.

Early last month, officers came across a smashed-up rental car with its airbags deployed on Line 14, south of Stratford.

They did not find the driver, but while searching the vehicle they found a Costco card that belonged to a St. Marys resident.

A couple of hours later, officers arrived at the home of the woman on the card, where officers noted fresh, wet footprints on the front porch and a key in the deadbolt, but the door was locked from the inside, and no one responded to knocks and doorbell rings.

The woman eventually answered, and officers noted she was slurring her words while incorrectly stating that her vehicle was in her garage.

A 39-year-old woman from St Marys has now been charged with driving over the legal limit and is banned from driving for one year.
