Call displays being changed by scammers to reflect legitimate agencies

Stratford police have issued a new warning regarding scammers.

A woman recently said she received a call that appeared on her display as coming from a courthouse in Stratford. Through the course of the call, the caller demanded that she send money.

Media Relations Officer Darren Fisher said scammers "are getting good at masking their numbers." He added that more discussion is needed, especially among seniors, about how to identify these types of scam calls and what to do.

"Ask questions that only someone from that agency would be able to answer," he said. "Everyone must be cautious when answering phone calls."

Scamming incidents are reported weekly across all of Midwestern Ontario, taking on many forms but most recently scammers have been altering numbers on call displays to appear more legitimate.
