ABCA secures money for annual tree planting program

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority has announced confirmation of funding for its 2020 Tree Planting program.

ABCA Land, Stewardship and Education Manager Kate Monk said they've received confirmation of funding from the federal government.

“They're supporting the Forest Ontario funding and also funding in the Ausable River watershed through a few different programs and then Huron Clean Water has done really well over the past fifteen years to support local tree planting," she said.

Monk said the job of staff is to find funding to support the planting of all of the trees that need to be planted in a given year and they don't know exactly what that amount is for this year because they're taking orders for trees until the end of February.

“Last year we did around 45,000 or so, with 170 different landowners, so that's a significant number of trees, so we're hoping to reach that this year at least, or surpass it. And they go into wind breaks or they're planted along streams and rivers.”

Monk said people can still order trees until the end of February and ABCA staff can help them match the type of tree they plant with the soil and moisture conditions on their property.
