County collecting signatures for public transit plan

Grey County is collecting signatures for a petition for its public transit plan.

The Grey Transit Route will offer regular service along Highways 26 and 10 and a third route will be offered between Owen Sound and Wiarton three days per week.

Stephanie Stewart, the manager of community transportation, said they need community backing before applying for a public vehicle license and there has been a lot of support in the past.

"We've had a lot of positive responses, and in addition to our survey we had out, we received 1,037 people that responded to it, and we got lots of positive feedback. So I'm assuming that many people will be in support of it, but this will be just another positive indication."

The petition can be found the county's website, grey.ca. Stewart said they want to ensure they do this right.

"Mainly ensuring that we can put out the best service while meeting the needs of as many Grey County residents as possible, and because we're so geographically large, we recognize that we won't be able to serve everybody at the beginning. But we are trying to make sure we pick the most appropriate route."

Stewart said the project is being funded through a grant.

"Currently it's being funded through a provincial grant we received. So the municipality of Southgate and Grey County both received provincial funding. So that's where our base funding will be starting from. In addition to that, we will be needing some additional dollars."
