Province invests in local skilled trades training

The provincial government is investing in skilled trades training in Grey Bruce.

MPP Bill Walker presented a cheque for over 250 thousand dollars to Georgian College in Owen Sound. The money funds a new pre-apprenticeship program in the construction and maintenance electrician trade. The goal for those in the program is to gain the fundamentals to enter a full apprenticeship program in business and industry. Kevin Weaver is the college's Vice President of Academics.

"We know the importance of skilled trades. It's the backbone of our economy and so we're willing to do whatever we can and work with our industry partners and our provincial government to make these opportunities happen," said Weaver at a news conference announcing the funding.

He says 20 students will begin the program next April.

"It is a wonderful opportunity for those 20 individuals and life changing."

The program includes in school training followed by a paid work placement.
