Suspect in custody after crime spree in Owen Sound

Police in Owen Sound have a man in custody following a crime spree across the city.

It started early Tuesday when an unlocked 2019 white pickup truck was stolen in the 1300 block of 4th Avenue West. Shortly after, someone tried to break into a home in the upper west side, but the residents woke up and scared the man off.  The white pickup truck was spotted at the scene.

Later Tuesday morning, a man using bank cards from a wallet that had been in the stolen truck made purchases at several stores on the west side.  The pickup was spotted behind a strip plaza where it crashed into a fence as it left the scene.

The truck was then observed at the Owen Sound District Secondary School, where it was driven across the football field, resulting in damage to the turf.

The truck crashed into a chain-link fence running along the north side of the property.  It became stuck and the man fled on foot.

Owen Sound police were able to arrest a suspect at an east-side store.  The 31-year-old man of no fixed address faces 10 criminal charges which include break and enter, mischief, using a stolen bank card, possession of property by crime, and breach of probation.

Damage to all the property, including the vehicle, was estimated at $20,000.
