Brockton council is making plans to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Walkerton water crisis.
Mayor Chris Peabody said they already have dates in mind to help remember and honour the memory of all those the crisis-affected in May of 2000.
"We're going to have a committee who will look at hosting a memorial type weekend, the weekend before the long weekend, that's when the E. coli struck, on the long weekend," said Peabody. "So we want to do it the weekend before."
The mayor said it will be a time to reflect and remember everyone who was affected by the E. coli outbreak and also to champion how far the town has come since then.
"Our committee will focus on remembering those who suffered and those who died in the tragedy, but at the same time, we're going to look at all the positive things that have happened in Walkerton since then, and how we've rebuilt the town," said Peabody.
In terms of the committee and some early brainstorming, one idea is to establish some sort of legacy fund or scholarship for a local student.
"Certainly there are some very good jobs working in the water sector and learning how to treat water. So it would be great if we had a scholarship for any students that were going off to a college program to learn how to be a water operator," said Peabody.
