An Owen Sound worker is the Grey Bruce Labour Council’s Community Activist of the Year.

Don Grieg is a long-time employee of Hobart Canada and a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 386. Grieg was named Activist of the Year at the Labour Council’s annual dinner Monday in Tara. Grieg was unable to attend.

Vice President Dave Trumble said he’s a worthy recipient of the honour.

“He comes to all our rallies, he’s involved heavily in Labour day. He helps with anti-poverty. He’s also instrumental in establishing our local injured works group and if you ever want anybody in your community stand up for working people, Don Grieg is the guy,” said Trumble.

Also at the Labour Council dinner, Sheldon Speedie was named Workers Health and Safety Activist of the year.  He’s a retired employee of Bruce Power and was chief Steward of the Power Workers Union.

“This was a total surprise to me. I didn’t expect to get any of this. My job has always been to just be out there trying to get things done and make sure the workplaces are safe,” said Speedie.
