UPDATE: Student charged after report of gun prompts lockdown at Stratford school

A 17-year-old boy has been charged after a gun scare prompted a lockdown at a high school in Stratford.

Police responded to Stratford North Western High School at around noon on Thursday after reports that a male has been seen carrying a handgun. The school was put into lockdown at 12:30 p.m. to ensure the safety of everyone in the building.

A 17-year-old student was identified as a suspect and arrested without incident and police seized a replica handgun. A 14-year-old student was also arrested for allegedly obstructing police.

The lockdown was called off at around 1:15 p.m. and the school day resumed as normal.

The 17-year-old boy who was arrested has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He has been released with a promise to appear in court on November 14. The 14-year-old boy who was arrested was released to his parents without charges.

Police said it is believed no specific threats were made to anyone at the school. Any students and staff who were affected by the incident have been offered to counsel at the school.
