Ontario working to ensure fish farming industry is healthy

The Ontario government is working to ensure a healthy fish farming industry.

Environment Minister Jeff Yurek provided details in an announcement at Cedar Crest Trout Farms near Hanover. Yurek said the government has released a policy paper detailing guidelines to provide the industry with long term certainty.

"It's also proving a source of clean, safe, certified fish for people to consume throughout the province. It's going to be in our restaurants, it's going to be in our grocery stores and hopefully grows that we can move into other markets and beyond, the world," said Yurek.

Cedar Crest Trout Farms owner R.J. Taylor said the certainty for the fish farmers means they are now better able to pursue long term financing with the ability to expand.

Yurek added the guidelines for fish farms protect water quality and support an environmentally sustainable industry.
