Library service will be back up and running soon in Southern Ontario

The Southern Ontario Library Service will be back up and running next month.

Huron County Cultural Services Director Beth Rumble said the service transported borrow items from one library system to another throughout Southern Ontario. The service was shut down a few months ago when the province cut its funding in half.

Rumble said the service will now resume, starting on July 8. But she added there are some changes.

“It will look a little bit different than previously," she said. "There are some new parameters in place. Just because there are additional costs to the way the service is now being run and also additional staff time to run the service, so we do need to put something in place to curb some of the volume.”

Rumble said it will now be the responsibility of each library to pay the postage cost to send items between libraries.

“Now the onus is on Huron County Library to pay the postage costs to mail the item to different library systems," she said. "There is a partial rebate that we'll be receiving in the new year, but because this is a new program, we don't know exactly what that rebate will look like or what percentage of costs we will get back.”

The good news is the system will be back and people will be able to borrow items from other libraries. Rumble added they are continuing to explore other options that might be less expensive.
