Labour shortage continues in Huron County

Two of the biggest problems facing Huron County employers are a shortage of workers and a lack of housing, and Economic Development Officer Chris Watson said there is no quick solution to either of those problems.

Watson said the four-county region has the lowest unemployment rate in the province.

"Last year it dipped below three per cent over the summer and we certainly expect it to do the same thing this year. So that makes it incredibly difficult for our employers to find and keep the employees that they need to grow and flourish," he said. "The feedback that we're hearing is that there are many employers in the area that are hesitant about expanding, not because they're not sure that they're going to be able to sell their product, but more because they're not going to be able to find the people to build that additional product."

Watson said part of the problem is that many young people want to travel and see the world when they get out of school, but an effort has to be made to make sure they know there are jobs for them in Huron County if they decide they'd like to come back.

The bigger problem is housing, and they're working with the planning department to see what can be done to provide attainable housing for people that might be interested in taking some of the jobs that are available in Huron County.
