Bayfield bridge plan still being fine-tuned

Changes are still being made to the plans for a new bridge over the Bayfield River, at the north end of the village.

Bayfield ward Councillor Bill Whetstone said the sidewalks on the bridge are going to be cantilevered and built on cement fingers that extend out over the river.

Whetstone said they've also worked out a cost-sharing agreement with the MTO to widen the sidewalks running north and south of the bridge to a normal sidewalk width to make it safer for pedestrians.

The municipality's share of that is $50,000, which is well below what it would cost for the municipality to do it on its own.

Whetstone added they are going to pull out some of the existing posts and re-locate the lighting as part of the bridge construction. It will be "heritage style lighting" to tie in Bayfield and the bridge.

Construction on the bridge is scheduled to start next year.
