Exeter weather radar station offline as network upgrades continue

The Exeter weather radar station is currently offline as part of a plan to upgrade the country's weather radar network.

According to Environment Canada, the upgrades will see the new "state-of-the-art radars incorporate dual polarization, a leading-edge technology that will enable forecasters to better distinguish between rain, snow, hail and freezing rain, as well as better discern the size, shape, and variety of precipitation particles".

The federal service notes this may affect the performance of certain smartphone weather apps that use data from the Exeter station, especially when it comes to rainfall amounts.

The upgrades are part of a plan that will see 20 new weather radar stations installed across the country.

The new radars will also have "extended tornado detection range", and "better serve weather-sensitive industries".

The Exeter weather radar upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of this July.
