Funding for SWIFT broadband project starting to flow

Huron County's representative on the SWIFT Committee that is tasked with bringing broadband service to all of Southwestern Ontario was very happy with Wednesday's announcement from the provincial Infrastructure Ministry that $63.7 million has been dedicated to the project.

The announcement was made this morning in Simcoe, in Norfolk County, but Roger Watt said it moves every community in Southwestern Ontario a little closer to the finish line.

Watt said it's impossible to know where everything sits on the timeline but the entire Small Communities Fund expenditures have to be done and over with and in the ground by sometime in 2023, which functionally means the spending has to be all spent about six months before whatever the deadline is.

Watt added that puts Huron County somewhere on the timeline between now and 2023

“But the entire Small Communities Fund expenditures have to be done and over with and in the ground by sometime in 2023, which functionally means the spending has to be all spent about six months before whatever the deadline is," he said.
